There’s a chill in the air and the days are noticeably shorter. There’s also a very certain chaos on the roads between 8.30 and 9 am each morning. That can only mean it is September and autumn (and school) is upon us. To me that is apples, harvest, the deep juicy sweetness of the end summer and bright deep shades of orange, yellow and red that are starting to appear everywhere.
We have had an incredible glut of apples (like every year!) and I hate things going to waste so it was inevitable – please, welcome our September special – the Apple and Sunflower Sourdough.
What makes it special?
Apples
Organic, locally grown, slowly cooked and turned into applesauce adding sharpness, sweetness and making the bread crumb incredibly soft.
Sunflower seeds
Organically grown, little nuggets of nuttiness and an excellent source of vitamin E which plays an important role in promoting brain health.
Spelt
Organic, wholemeal and stoneground you will be familiar with this grain from last month. I am using it here again as it compliments so well the nuttiness of the sunflower seeds and creates a beautiful loaf.
The Apple & Sunflower Sourdough will be landing on doorsteps week beginning 26th September.
What else is happening at Flour & Soul?
We are having our first pop-up shop on Saturday 24th September at Goodness Zero Waste from 9.30 am in Urmston . Many of you will be familiar with Lucy’s shop but just in case you’ve never been – it’s on Crofts Bank Road, opposite NatWest.

We will have loads of pastries, focaccia and bread and I am planning the appearance of our sandwich tin loaves! Same sourdough – just in a different shape!
